As we close out our inaugural CPA Advocate Week, we have a ‘call to action’ for you. You can make a difference. By building a relationship with your legislator and by sharing your personal anecdotes, you can make an exponential impact on our efforts.

Advocacy may seem intimidating, but the KSCPA makes it simple by providing a pre-written email you can customize, the link to find your legislator, and etiquette tips to keep in mind. Legislators appreciate hearing from their constituents, and they take note of what issues are important to their constituents. In this video – Jessica Dwyer, CPA describes her experience in meeting her legislator!

This is where YOU come in! Please email or call your legislator by January 30th. By contacting your legislator, you can help them understand issues important to CPAs and let them know the KSCPA is available to call upon for expertise in business and tax-related matters.

When contacting your legislator, keep these etiquette tips in mind:

  1. Properly address your legislator - Honorable [Full Name], or Representative [Full Name], or Senator [Full Name]
  2. Identify yourself and that you are a constituent
  3. Be clear and concise on your discussion points
  4. Provide a summary in writing that includes your contact information
  5. Be positive and informational and refrain from arguing
  6. Be specific and provide personal story examples
  7. Be respectful and professional
  8. If you are asked a question that you cannot answer, tell them you don’t know but will find out and get back to them
  9. Be sure to state that you and the KSCPA can be a resource to them on tax and business issues

Please support the interests of CPAs in Kansas.
